Engineers Without Borders (EWB) - USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.

EWB-Cal Poly is an affiliate chapter of EWB-USA. The vision of the campus organization is a world in which the communities served have the capacity to sustainably meet their basic human needs.  The goal is also to give student members enriched global perspectives through the innovative professional educational opportunities that the EWB-USA program provides.

The Cal Poly student group is currently involved in three projects in three very different communities:

  • The Nicaragua Team has just completed construction of a health clinic outside the capital city of Managua and is returning to assess new projects this summer. They are now looking to install a septic tank for the new health clinic.
  • The Thailand Team has successfully installed six Slow Sand filters throughout the northern region of Thailand over the last two years and is planning to return in September to monitor the systems.
  • The India Team made their first trip this past August and will be returning to implement corn-dekernelers this summer. They will also be assessing the need for improved sanitation systems and latrines.

All groups use a combination of modern technology and simple, site-appropriate engineering solutions in their project work.  A student representative from each group will present recent progress and activities.  Groups are partially funded through student fees at the University but often rely on industry involvement and collaboration with the projects.
