We hear a lot about how the Internet has decimated the big music and entertainment companies in the industry's top income bracket, but it seems like more artists and writers than ever are able to craft modest regional livings. How is that? The answer is two fold. First, services like iTunes and Netflix are re-imposing control over the distribution of creative works, but with far more open access than the old systems of warehouses full of records or DVDs and brick-and-mortar retailers. The second piece is a thriving ecosystem of technology-empowered small businesses that give artists new tools to cost-effectively create, package and market their own work.
