Modern Web Design is much more than simply creating a standard desktop site and calling it a day. With touch-screen products like tablets and smart phones becoming the preferred way for many users to access web content, designers must provide an experience tailored for these machines. CSS2 added support for the media=”screen” way of defining which stylesheet is used to represent the content, and now CSS3 takes it to the next level by letting you target Media Queries. This gives you the ability to customize your site for different resolutions and devices, eliminating awkward zooming and horizontal scrolling.
Media Queries are one of the most exciting aspects of Web Design today, allowing us to move away from both elastic layouts that leave many display scenarios up to chance and standard fixed layouts that do not scale. With Media Queries, designers now have ultimate control over the end-user experience of their work.
For this presentation I will be discussing:
- The basics of setting up and using media queries
- Strategies for altering the design of your layout
- Pros and Cons of using media queries VS setting up a specific mobile and/or tablet site
- Current browser support for media queries
