Design can be a daunting and mystifying subject. There are thousands of books and millions of articles written on the subject of design, so where should you start?

This presentation will provide a basic overview of the principles of design to help you develop your eye and produce attractive work. Learn how to bridge the gap between the client and the designer and how to integrate the basic principles into your work. We'll look at real world examples and see how a design can go from blah to beautiful.

 Topics include:

  • What are the basic principles of design and how to integrate them into your work
  • How to communicate effectively with type, color and hierarchy
  • What is a grid? And when should I use it?
  • Questions to ask yourself to assure your work follows the basic design principles
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them

About the Speaker:

Lorraine Donegan is an Associate Professor in the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, California. She is the coordinator for the Design Reproduction Technology concentration within the Graphic Communication department. One specific goal of Ms. Donegan's teaching is to link design with technology, preparing students to understand the language and role of the graphic designer and the final product. Versed in digital and traditional printing she also emphasizes how to repurpose print design to meet the flexibilities and constraints for web publishing. Her teaching and research specialties include typography and design technology of books, magazines, newspapers and web sites.
