Declarative Bindings
Easily associate DOM elements with model data using a concise, readable syntax

Automatic UI Refresh
When your data model's state changes, your UI updates automatically

Dependency Tracking
Implicitly set up chains of relationships between model data, to transform and combine it

Templating
Quickly generate sophisticated, nested UIs as a function of your model data

Knockout's powerful features that enable you to write clean JavaScript using the MVVM pattern. If you are tired of writing spaghetti JS code and you are looking for a new approach, you should not miss this event.

Register for the event here:
http://www.softec.org/groups/slo_net_user_group/Events/Event/135.aspx

Learn More About HTML5 with Scott Stanfield

Scott Stanfield, CEO of Vertigo Software, Inc., will be speaking at the SLO .NET User Group meeting Tuesday, June 14, at 5:30 pm in the first floor conference room of the Cal Poly Tech Park, Building 83. Vertigo Software, Inc., is a digital design and development shop. Scott is a frequent public speaker, presenting on software technology and design for the past 20 years. Before starting Vertigo in 1997, he worked at Pixar in Point Richmond, California, which happens to be the current home of Vertigo. Scott holds a BS in Computer Science for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Scott will cover how Vertigo balances HTML and plug-ins, the tradeoffs of going HTML over native for mobile apps, and strategies for ideal compatibility across many browsers. You'll analyze the latest browser statistics, review the state of the spec, and discuss how to answer clients who want rich sites, but want it "HTML5 compatible".

With all the buzz around this topic, you have a good reason to be skeptical; Scott will help you be more informed about where to invest your energy. This is a SLO .Net User Group presentation you won't want to miss.

No registration is required for this or any SLO .NET User Group monthly meeting. Dinner and soft drinks will be provided. All User Groups meetings are now being held in the Cal Poly Tech Park, Building 83. No parking permit is required. If you have any questions about this event or are interesting in speaking at future User Group meetings, please email the SLO .NET User Group Team at Info@SloDotNet.org or visit our website at SloDotNet.org.

Blake Davis from MINDBODY Inc will be educating us one the phenomenon that is the jQuery library:

Why aren't you using jQuery yet?

In this session, we'll work with the popular javascript library jQuery to create useful and interesting behaviors on a website. You will quickly see, that jQuery helps the web developer do three very important things:

1. Improve the consistency of behavior across all browsers.
2. Add flair to your website (animation, ajax) with very little effort.
3. Simplify common dom manipulation tasks, allowing you to do more with less code.

We'll do advanced dom manipulation, play with some ajax on top of an MVC application, and see some very useful and easy to use plugins created by the internet community.

If you are doing any sort of client side coding in javascript, and have not taken a look at jQuery yet, this session will show you what you have been missing.

Advanced Routing Techniques in MVC

Robert Hope, Systems Architect for BizBuySell, the Internet's Largest Business for Sale Marketplace, will take us through his pending CodePlex project RouteFlex, a flexible routing framework for use with MVC.NET and ASP.NET WebForms. The framework makes it easy for developers to manage and maintain urls for their web applications that require data lookup and validation (making sure that the country is a valid country on http://mywebsite.com/united_states) as well as independent url positioning (supporting both http://mywebsite.com/united_states/california and http://mywebsite.com/california/united_states) without impacting other urls on the site, and without generating hundreds or thousands of routes in their application routing tables.

Meeting on March 9th, 2010

Things You Can Do in Your WPF Applications

Gustavo Cavalcanti the Fresno .NET User Group Leader will make the 2.5 hour trip to teach us what he knows about WPF. Gustavo says, "There is no such thing as "the right way" of building a quality application, but there are lots of things you can do in your Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) projects, right from the beginning, that can make your refactoring cycles much quicker and save you future headaches."

Gustavo's talk will be a low-fluff/hands-on presentation full of scattered nuggets of information and demos.

In this session we're going to talk about:

WPF Resources

Dependency Properties

Structuring your Application

How to "Skin" a WPF Application

Using Styles and Data Templates

Helpful External Third-Party Tools

Application Deployment

Prototyping with SketchFlow

And Much Much More!

You are not going to want to miss this!

It's Happening At:

Date: March 9th, 2010
Time: 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Promega Biosciences
Address: 277 Granada Dr. - SLO
Google Map

Meeting on February 9th 2010

Geometry and Geography – An Introduction to Geospatial Processing in SQL Server 2008

Steven Griffith of the Department of Planning and Building for the County of San Luis Obispo will share with us these new and powerful features of SQL Server that were added in Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Steven provided us with a synopsis and outline of what we can look forward to learning:

Geospatial technologies have touched everyone - from Google Maps to iPhone apps, this technology is making itself felt in new and interesting ways. Microsoft introduced "baked in" support for geospatial data processing with the Geometry and Geography User Defined Data types in SQL 2005 and 2008. We’ll take a quick look at these two new data types, what they are, what they represent and a peek behind the curtain of how to use them.

Introduction to Geospatial Processing
a. Real world examples
b. Standards – Open Geospatial Consortium

The Basics
a. Point, LineString and Polygon
b. MultiLineString, MultiPolygon

What’s the difference?
a. SQLGeometry
b. SQLGeography
    i. SRIDs

Creating Spatial Data
a. Create table
b. Data Formats
    i. Well-Known Text
    ii. Well-Known Binary
    iii. GML

Basic Spatial Operations
a. Envelope & Buffers
b. Intersections
c. Access methods

SQL Extended Functions
a. IsValid and MakeValid

Creating a Spatial Index

Time: 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Promega Biosciences
Address: 277 Granada Dr. - SLO
Google Map

Ringing in the '10 with a new community site

We are pumped to be kicking off 2010 with a brand new community web site for our user group, graciously sponsored by Softec and powered by the Couto Solutions Community Server Building Blocks suite of products. We now have the ability to keep our group informed as well as continue our discussions and archive meeting content and related information. Thanks guys!

This year is going to be full of exciting releases and product maturation from Microsoft, including the following:

.NET 4.0 framework

Visual Studio 2010

ASP.NET MVC 2.0

A new streamlined ASP.NET Ajax Library powered by JQuery

The launch of Windows Azure

Silverlight 4

WIF (Windows Identity Foundation)
